Aven is going to miss her friends and their inside jokes – but most of all their acceptance and knowledge of her story. Aven is a person who was born without arms, and as she navigates a new home, new school and trying to make new friend, she can’t help but notice everyone is always staring at her. This title could be used as a part of a thematic literature circle (relevant themes could include belonging, resiliency, identity etc.) or as a whole class novel. Grade level suitable is 6,7, and 8.
As this novel was selected as a Langley Middle School Read Aloud novel, there is a Teacher Guide that was developed in collaboration with Langley staff. A copy of the Teacher Guide is included in the kit, and a copy of the Teacher Guide is also posted electronically on the SD35 Instructional Services Website here. There are also audio and eBook copies of this text on SORA for supplementary use.

Target audience is grades 4-6, but could also be used for older grades, especially for ELL Social Studies. The Tales from Big Spirit series consists of six graphic novels. Each novel in the collection tells the story of an Aboriginal figure who has created a lasting legacy for the history of indigenous people and for Canadian history; some of the figures are already well known and others of them deserve to be. The six novels are intended for readers in grade 4 and up, and were designed to correspond to grades 4-6 social studies curricula across Canada. Titles include: The Scout (Tommy Prince) -- The Peacemaker (Thanadelthur) -- The Rebel (Gabriel Dumont) -- The Ballad of Nancy April (Shawnadithit) -- The Poet (Pauline Johnson) -- The Chief (Mistahimaskwa (Big Bear)).
