Vintage items (baseball glove, rice sack, 2 gardening tools, fishing new mending tool, fishing boat light, boat navigation tool, book of records), historical toys (31 Kendama, 16 Hanafuda card games), 31 reprinted issues of a newspaper, white gloves, teacher resource documents This kit includes materials for a fun social studies theme day. It is meant to go with the Japanese Canadian Internment Kit. The materials and activities in this kit allow students to take the perspective of a Japanese Canadian child living in the Lower Mainland before they were forced out of their homes during WWII. Students can explore vintage items and make inferences about them, play with vintage toys and games, read historical documents, and take part in activities that mimic childhood in the 1930s.

It also includes lessons that show how internment policies were the outcome of years of anti-Asian racism. Post-war lessons demonstrate how Japanese Canadians continued to advocate for human rights during the redress movement and demonstrate resilience today. Topics include: early immigrants, their participation in the natural resource industries, and their involvement in the labour movement; picture brides; Japanese Canadians in Langley and other pre-war Japanese Canadian communities; Japanese Canadian internment and dispossession; resistance to injustice and advocacy for human rights; the deportation (“repatriation” of Japanese Canadians; Japanese Canadian redress; and the contemporary Japanese Canadian community.
