Trigger warning: This book is about recovering and healing from violence. Contains scenes of sexual and physical violence, and depictions of vicarious trauma. Set in a community of mixed Indigenous and settler descent, this is the story of a multigenerational family dealing with the fallout of a shocking crime. The prose of this authentic Indigenous resource is quite accessible, making it an excellent choice for secondary literature circles. Booklist starred, February 2018.
Pub Weekly, January 2018. This authentic Indigenous title is an excellent literature circle choice for secondary school students, and is Locally Approved for use in grades 10-12. When Stella, a young Métis mother, looks out her window one evening and spots someone in trouble on the Break--a barren field on an isolated strip of land outside her house--she calls the police to alert them to a possible crime. In a series of shifting narratives, people who are connected, both directly and indirectly, with the victim--police, family, and friends--tell their personal stories leading up to that fateful night.

Born into a magical Cree world in snowy northern Manitoba, Champion and Ooneemeetoo Okimasis are all too soon torn from their family and thrust into the hostile world of a Catholic residential school. Their language is forbidden, their names are changed to Jeremiah and Gabriel, and both boys are abused by priests.

As young men, estranged from their own people and alienated from the culture imposed upon them, the Okimasis brothers fight to survive. Wherever they go, the Fur Queen--a wily, shape-shifting trickster--watches over them with a protective eye. For Jeremiah and Gabriel are destined to be artists. Through music and dance they soar.

This is a humorous novel that explores a community struggling to weave an increasingly abstract past with some kind of meaningful future.
A story of magic, family, a mysterious stranger . . . and a band of marauding raccoons. This authentic Indigenous title is an excellent literature circle choice for secondary school students, and is approved. When a stranger pulls up astride a 1953 Indian Chief motorcycle to the sleepy Anishnawbe community called Otter Lake everything turns upside down especially when the Reserve's Chief, Maggie, is swept off her feet by the stranger, but her teenage son is suspicious of the stranger and he teams up with his uncle Wayne to drive the stranger from the Reserve.

In Nobody Cries At Bingo the narrator, Dawn, invites the reader to witness firsthand Dumont family life on the Okanese First Nation. This authentic Indigenous title is an excellent literature circle choice for secondary students. Beyond the stereotypes and cliche's of Rez dogs, drinking, and bingos, the story of a girl who loved to read and her family begins to unfold. It is her hopes, dreams, and indomitable humour that lay bare the beauty and love within her family. It is her unerring eye that reveals the great bond of family expressed in the actions and affections of her sisters, aunties, uncles, brothers, cousins, nieces, nephews, and ultimately her ancestors.

Secret Path is a ten song album by Gord Downie with a graphic novel by illustrator Jeff Lemire that tells the story of Chanie "Charlie" Wenjack, a twelve-year-old boy who died in flight from the Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School fifty years ago. Chanie, misnamed Charlie by his teachers, was a young boy who died on October 22, 1966, walking the railroad tracks, trying to escape from the Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School to return home. Chanie's home was 400 miles away. He didn't know that. He didn't know where it was, nor how to find it, but, like so many kids--more than anyone will be able to imagine--he tried. Chanie's story is Canada's story. We are not the country we thought we were. History will be re-written. We are all accountable. Secret Path acknowledges a dark part of Canada's history--the long suppressed mistreatment of Indigenous children and families by the residential school system--with the hope of starting our country on a road to reconciliation. Every year as we remember Chanie Wenjack, the hope for Secret Path is that it educates all Canadians young and old on this omitted part of our history, urging our entire nation to play an active role in the preservation of Indigenous lives and culture in Canada. The next hundred years are going to be painful as we come to know Chanie Wenjack and thousands like him--as we find out about ourselves, about all of us--but only when we do can we truly call ourselves, "Canada.".

This set of 6 books is an excellent BIPOC choice and would work well in conjunction with other titles to create a literature circle. A contemporary graphic novel about Indigenous young women facing heart-wrenching decisions and the anguish of missing loved ones.
Tasha Spillet's graphic-novel debut tells a story of kinship, resilience, cultural resurgence, and the anguish of a missing loved one. Miikwan and Dez are best friends. Miikwan is Anishinaabe; Dez is Inninew. Together, the teens navigate the challenges of growing up Indigenous in an urban landscape—they're so close, they even completed their Berry Fast together. However, when Dez's grandmother becomes too sick, Dez is told she can't stay with her anymore. With the threat of a group home looming, Dez can't bring herself to go home and disappears. Miikwan is devastated, and the wound of her missing mother resurfaces. Will Dez's community find her before it's too late? Will Miikwan be able to cope if they don't?

The guiding question of this lit kit is the question: What is the nature of evil? It includes the following titles: Beartown (6 copies plus 2 audio versions (Playaways)), The Moon of the Crusted Snow (6 copies), The Complete Maus (includes volumes I and II of this well known graphic novel) (6 copies), The Break (6 copies), Lord of the Flies (6 copies), The Marrow Thieves (6 copies), and The Outside Circle (graphic novel 6 copies).
In literature circles small groups of students gather together to discuss a piece of literature in depth. The discussion is guided by the students' response to what has been read. Collaboration is the key to this approach.
